IVF AND IUI
What should I do after IUI? Mostly, live normally.
Everyone has a rule for you after IUI: lie still, don't travel, don't eat papaya. Most of it is not true, and none of it changes the result. Here is what actually matters in the two weeks before your test.

- After IUI
Key takeaways
- Lie down for about 15 minutes after IUI, then carry on with your day; bed rest is not needed.
- Travel by car, two-wheeler, train or plane is fine, and so is any sitting or sleeping position.
- No food, position or rest raises the chance of pregnancy after IUI; what decides it happened before the IUI.
- Take your medicines as prescribed, and test only on the date we give you.
The short answer
After IUI, lie down for about 15 minutes, then go back to your normal day: work, housework, stairs and travel are all fine. Bed rest is not needed, and no food raises the chance of pregnancy. At Jananam Fertility Centre, Chennai, we ask you to take your medicines as prescribed and test on the date we give you.
01What should I do right after IUI?
Lie down for about 15 minutes, empty your bladder, then go home or to work.
The 15 minutes are mostly for comfort. The sperm are placed inside the womb, so they will not fall out when you stand up or pass urine. A trial of this exact question found that lying still for 15 minutes did not change the pregnancy rate. Mild cramps or a little spotting in the hours afterwards are common and do not mean anything has gone wrong.
02Is bed rest needed after IUI? How many days should I rest?
No. Bed rest is not needed after IUI, not even for a day, and staying home does not raise the chance of pregnancy.
Go to work, do housework, climb stairs and keep your daily walk. A pregnancy depends on the egg, the sperm and the womb, not on how still you keep. If your ovaries were stimulated with injections, skip heavy lifting, hard gym sessions and high-impact exercise for a few days. That is for comfort, because the ovaries can be enlarged, not because it affects implantation.
Nothing you do after IUI raises the chance that it works. Not rest, not a position, not a food. What decides it (the sperm, the egg, open tubes and the timing) was in place before the IUI. So you cannot cause a failed cycle by living normally. (What the evidence says)
03Can I travel after IUI, even on a two-wheeler?
Yes. You can travel by two-wheeler, car, bus, train or plane after IUI, from the same day.
Bumps on the road and the vibration of a bike do not shake the sperm out or stop a pregnancy starting. Many couples travel to Chennai for treatment and go home the same day or the next. On a long drive, stop for breaks as you would anyway. The only reason to stay close is the test date and any scans we have asked for.
04What is the right sitting or sleeping position after IUI?
There is no right position after IUI; sit and sleep however you are comfortable.
Sitting on the floor, sitting cross-legged or squatting does not cause a miscarriage or stop a pregnancy. You can sleep on your back or either side. Keeping your legs raised or a pillow under your hips does not help either.
05What should I eat after IUI for success?
No food raises the chance of IUI working; eat normal, balanced home food and keep taking folic acid.
Rice, dal, vegetables, curd, fruit and your usual protein are all fine. If you eat chicken, mutton, fish or eggs, keep eating them. Ripe papaya and pineapple eaten as ordinary fruit have not been shown to stop conception or implantation. What does matter: no smoking (including smoke around you), no alcohol, and folic acid 400 micrograms a day until 12 weeks of pregnancy (NHS). Check with us before starting any new medicine or supplement.

Three things: take your medicines exactly as prescribed, test only on the date we give you, and call us if something worries you.
If we have prescribed progesterone, keep taking it even if you bleed, until we tell you to stop. Test about 14 days after the IUI, on the date we give you. [CONFIRM: blood test at the clinic or home test] The trigger injection contains the same hormone a pregnancy test looks for, so testing early can show a false positive. Sore breasts, cramps and mood changes usually come from the medicines and do not tell you whether it has worked.

Questions couples ask after IUI
Still unsure? Ask us on WhatsApp — a real person replies.
Can we have sex after IUI?
Usually yes; sex after IUI is safe and does not wash out the sperm. If more than one or two follicles grew in your cycle, ask us first, because the advice can differ then. [CONFIRM: Jananam advice]
Is cramping or spotting after IUI normal?
Yes, mild cramps and light spotting in the first hours or day are common, usually from the thin tube passing through the cervix. Heavy bleeding is not expected; tell us rather than wait.
When should I take a pregnancy test after IUI?
About 14 days after the IUI, on the date we give you. Testing earlier can give a false positive from the trigger injection or a false negative because it is too soon, and neither changes what happens next.
What if my period starts before the test date?
Call us before you stop any medicine. Bleeding does not always mean the cycle has failed, and progesterone should not be stopped without advice. If a positive test is followed by bleeding, read our guide to chemical pregnancy.
What should I avoid after IUI?
Avoid smoking, smoke around you and alcohol, and skip heavy lifting and hard exercise for a few days if your ovaries were stimulated. Do not stop or start any medicine without asking us. Most other warnings you hear (travel, stairs, papaya, sitting on the floor) are not needed.
How many IUI cycles should we try before IVF?
It depends mainly on her age and egg reserve, and we agree the number before the first IUI. Our limits by age are set out in full in our guide to moving from IUI to IVF.
