Donor egg IVF: the hardest part is the decision.

Donor egg IVF uses eggs from another woman, fertilised with your partner's sperm, to create an embryo you carry. You give birth to the baby and you are the mother, medically and legally.

  • Donor aged 23 to 35, by law
  • One donation per donor, ever
  • Usually one blastocyst transferred
  • Time to decide, not a deadline

Is this right for you?

Do any of these sound like you?

Worth discussing if

  • Told my egg reserve is very low
  • Early menopause, or ovaries removed
  • Several IVF cycles with no usable embryos
  • Chemotherapy or radiotherapy in the past
  • A genetic condition I don't want to pass on

PROBABLY NOT YET

Before donor eggs, ask whether a different own-egg plan has been tried.

  • You have not yet been offered an own-egg plan. Ask whether a different own-egg plan has been tried.
  • You were told low reserve means donor eggs. For low reserve, the approach here is egg accumulation and individualised stimulation, including dual stimulation, rather than simply higher doses.
  • You heard this for the first time today. Nobody is asked to agree to donor eggs in the same visit it is first raised.
  • Neither of you has been tested, or consented in writing. Both of you are tested and both of you consent, in writing, as the law requires.
Yes, ask Dr Vani's team

None of these? Donor eggs may not be your next step. Ask about low reserve first.

01

When is donor egg IVF considered?

It is considered when your own eggs are unlikely to give you a baby, or should not be used.

The embryo is made from a donor's egg and your partner's sperm, and you carry the pregnancy. Common reasons: early menopause (premature ovarian insufficiency), ovaries removed or damaged by surgery, chemotherapy or radiotherapy, and very low ovarian reserve. It is also raised after repeated cycles with no usable embryos, and when a serious genetic condition would otherwise be passed on. Egg quality falls with age and cannot be restored.

Honest note

Before donor eggs, ask whether a different own-egg plan has been tried. For low reserve, Dr Vani's approach is egg accumulation and individualised stimulation, including dual stimulation, rather than simply higher doses. (Dr Vani Sundarapandian, clinical positions)

What are the rules for egg donation in India?

Egg donation in India is governed by the Assisted Reproductive Technology (Regulation) Act, 2021, and the rules are strict.

Only a registered ART bank may screen and provide an egg donor; a clinic cannot find one directly. The donor must be 23 to 35 years old, may donate only once in her life, and no more than seven eggs may be collected from her. One donor's eggs go to one couple only. The couple must arrange 12 months of insurance for the donor. Donation cannot be bought or sold.

Legal reference: ART Act 2021 s.27(1) bank only

Legal reference: s.27(2) donor age 23 to 35

Legal reference: s.27(3) one couple

Legal reference: s.27(4) once in life, max 7 oocytes

Legal reference: s.22(1)(b) insurance 12 months

Legal reference: s.29 no sale

03

Who can have donor egg IVF, and is the donor anonymous?

Under the Act, treatment is for a woman above 21 and below 50, and a man above 21 and below 55, with written consent from everyone involved.

The donor's identity is kept confidential: you will not learn who she is, and she will not learn who you are. She gives up all parental rights. The child is, in law, the biological child of the couple, with the same rights as any other child. Eligibility for single women depends on the Act and its rules, so we explain yours in writing [CONFIRM].

04

How does a donor egg cycle work for you?

Your part is preparing your womb lining; the donor's part is the stimulation and egg collection.

Your lining is built with oestrogen tablets or patches and checked by scan. Progesterone is added, and a blastocyst is transferred on the 6th day of progesterone. Most embryos are frozen first, so your transfer can be timed to your body, not the donor's. Progesterone continues into early pregnancy.

Honest note

Donor egg cycles usually mean a single blastocyst transfer. Twins carry more risk in pregnancy, and there is no reason to accept it. Dr Vani's rule for every patient: "We do not transfer more than two embryos under any circumstance." (Dr Vani Sundarapandian, clinical positions)

05

What is the part that is not medical?

The hardest part of donor egg IVF is not the procedure; it is the decision, and later, what to tell your child.

Most people need time to grieve the genetic link before they can choose. That grief is normal and it does not mean the decision is wrong. Counselling is offered to both of you, separately if you want. Research on donor-conceived families favours telling a child early, in simple words. In India the donor stays anonymous, so you can tell your child how they were conceived, but not who the donor was.

06

Is a donor egg pregnancy different?

Donor egg pregnancies carry a higher risk of high blood pressure and pre-eclampsia, so they need closer checks.

This is a reason to plan, not a reason to avoid treatment. Tell your obstetrician the pregnancy is from donor eggs, and expect regular blood pressure checks. Pregnancy after 45 also carries more risk of diabetes in pregnancy and caesarean birth, so a medical review comes before treatment. Jananam is fertility only; we hand over your pregnancy care to an obstetrician [CONFIRM: referral practice and week].

Your donor egg journey, step by step.

  1. 1

Consultation and tests for both of you 1 to 2 visits [CONFIRM]

History, past reports, a scan of your womb, and a semen analysis for your partner. We check your health for pregnancy too.

  2. 2

Counselling and time to decide As long as you need

You talk through the decision, the law and telling a child. Nothing is booked until both of you are sure.

  3. 3

Written consent and donor matching Wait told at consultation [CONFIRM]

Both partners sign consent. A registered ART bank matches a donor on physical features and blood group. You arrange the donor's insurance.

  4. 4

Donor's stimulation and egg collection About 8 to 12 days of injections, collection about 36 hours after the trigger

The donor has daily injections and scans, then a short egg collection under sedation [CONFIRM: where].

  5. 5

Fertilisation and embryo culture Day 0 to day 5 or 6

Eggs are fertilised with your partner's sperm, usually by ICSI, and grown to blastocyst. Most embryos are frozen.

  6. 6

Your lining and the transfer About 10 to 14 days of oestrogen, transfer on the 6th day of progesterone for a blastocyst

Scans check your lining. One embryo is placed in your womb in a short procedure without anaesthesia.

  7. 7

Pregnancy test and early support Blood test about 12 to 14 days after transfer

Progesterone continues into early pregnancy. After the early scans, your care moves to an obstetrician [CONFIRM].

Questions patients ask

Still unsure? Ask us on WhatsApp — a real person replies.

Can donor egg IVF work the first time?

Yes, it can, but no honest clinic can promise it will. Plan for more than one transfer, with spare embryos frozen, so a second attempt does not mean starting again.

Do donor egg babies look like the father or the mother?

A donor egg baby's genes come from the donor and from the man whose sperm is used, so inherited features come from those two people. You still shape your baby: the pregnancy you carry affects how your baby grows and how healthy they are at birth. Resemblance in a family also comes from how a child is raised, the expressions, speech and habits they pick up from you.

What is egg donor IVF?

Egg donor IVF is the same as donor egg IVF: eggs from a donor are fertilised in the lab and one embryo is placed in your womb. You carry the baby and you are the legal mother.

How old can an egg donor be in India?

An egg donor in India must be between 23 and 35 years old under the ART Act 2021. She can donate only once in her life, and no more than seven eggs can be collected from her.

Can we choose our egg donor?

No, you cannot choose a donor by identity in India; the donor stays anonymous. The ART bank matches her to you on features such as height, complexion and blood group.

Is there an age limit for donor egg IVF in India?

Yes. The ART Act 2021 allows treatment for a woman above 21 and below 50, and a man above 21 and below 55. A health check before treatment matters more with age, because pregnancy risks rise.

What does donor egg IVF cost at Jananam?

The cost depends on the donor arrangement, your medication, lab work and how many transfers you need. You get a written package price after the first consultation, before anything starts.
