TREATMENTS · EGG FREEZING
Egg freezing keeps the option open. It is not insurance.
Egg freezing collects some of your eggs now and stores them frozen, so you can try IVF with them later. The eggs stay the age they were when frozen; the rest of you does not.
- About 2 weeks of injections
- Egg collection under sedation
- Age at freezing matters most
- Stored up to 10 years in India
- Injections grow several eggs
- Eggs collected under sedation
- Mature eggs vitrified
- Stored until you need them
Is this right for you?
Do any of these sound like you?
Worth discussing if
- I want children, but not yet
- I'm facing chemotherapy or ovarian surgery
- I have endometriosis or an ovarian cyst
- My AMH was lower than expected
- Early menopause runs in my family
PROBABLY NOT YET
Women are often sold egg freezing as insurance. It is not.
- You are hoping this guarantees a baby later. It keeps an option open; it does not guarantee a baby.
- You expect frozen eggs to hold your own fertility where it is. They do not.
- You have not had an AMH test or a scan yet. An AMH test can still tell you where you stand.
- You have a partner now. Freezing embryos instead of eggs is sometimes worth discussing.
None of these? You may not need to freeze. An AMH test can still tell you where you stand.
01What are the benefits of egg freezing?
The main benefit of egg freezing is that your eggs stay the age they were when frozen, while you decide when, or whether, to try for a baby.
It separates the decision to have a child from the timing of your ovaries. It is used before treatment that can damage the ovaries, such as chemotherapy. It helps when endometriosis or ovarian surgery may reduce egg numbers. And it is used by women who are not ready yet, for personal, work or relationship reasons.
Freezing before cancer treatment02What age should I freeze my eggs?
The younger you are when you freeze, the better your eggs are likely to be; age at freezing matters more than anything else.
Egg quality falls with age, and it falls faster from the mid-thirties. Eggs frozen younger are more likely to be chromosomally normal. Younger women also usually get more eggs per cycle. So freezing at 32 and using the eggs at 40 is very different from freezing at 40. An AMH test tells you about egg numbers; only age tells you about quality.
AMH test03What does egg freezing not promise?
Egg freezing does not guarantee a baby: not every frozen egg survives thawing, fertilises, or grows into an embryo that implants.
Each step loses some eggs. That is why the number of eggs frozen and your age at freezing both matter, and why some women need more than one cycle. Frozen eggs do not stop your own fertility from declining, and they do not remove the risks of pregnancy at an older age.
Women are often sold egg freezing as insurance. It is not. It keeps an option open; it does not guarantee a baby. We will tell you, from your own age and tests, whether one cycle is likely to be enough, and when freezing is unlikely to help. (Jananam, following Dr Vani's position: "We'll tell you when to stop")
04How does the egg freezing process work?
Egg freezing takes about two weeks of hormone injections to grow several eggs, then a short egg collection under sedation.
Injections start early in your period and usually run 8 to 12 days, with scans and blood tests to adjust the dose. A trigger injection matures the eggs. About 36 hours later, eggs are collected through the vagina with a fine needle, under sedation, in about 20 to 30 minutes. You go home the same day [CONFIRM: day-care].
05How are eggs frozen and stored?
Eggs are frozen by vitrification, a very fast freezing method, and stored in liquid nitrogen at minus 196°C.
Vitrification freezes the egg so fast that ice crystals do not form, which is why it replaced older slow freezing. Only mature eggs are frozen. When you are ready, eggs are thawed, fertilised by ICSI and grown to embryos. If you have a partner now, freezing embryos instead of eggs is sometimes worth discussing.
Embryo freezing06How long can eggs be frozen in India?
Under the ART (Regulation) Act 2021, stored gametes and embryos are kept for up to 10 years [CONFIRM: legal read on own-egg storage].
At the end of the storage period, and with your consent, they are allowed to perish or are donated for research. The Act allows treatment for women above 21 and below 50, which matters for when you plan to use them. Your consent form records what happens to your eggs in every case. We remind you before the storage period ends [CONFIRM].

What are the benefits of egg freezing?
The main benefit is that frozen eggs stay the age they were when frozen, so you keep the chance of using younger eggs later. It helps before cancer treatment or ovarian surgery, and when you are not ready to have a child yet. It does not guarantee a baby.
What are the benefits of freezing eggs for women in their thirties?
In your early thirties, egg freezing captures eggs before the steeper fall in quality from the mid-thirties. You usually get more eggs per cycle too. After the late thirties, freezing still helps some women, but more cycles may be needed.
Can I freeze my eggs in Chennai if I live in Sri Lanka?
Yes. Women from Sri Lanka come to Jananam, Neelankarai, for egg freezing, and the first consultation can be by video. Plan to stay in Chennai for about two weeks for the injections and collection. Colombo to Chennai is about 1h 25m direct.
What is the egg freezing cost for someone from Sri Lanka?
The cost is the same written package whether you live in Chennai or abroad, and it depends on your medication dose, the number of cycles and storage years. You get it in writing after your video consultation [CONFIRM], before you travel. Travel and stay are separate.
Does egg freezing hurt?
The injections sting briefly, and egg collection is done under sedation, so you should not feel it. Afterwards some cramping and bloating is common for a few days.
Does egg freezing reduce my own fertility?
No, egg freezing does not use up your future eggs. The eggs collected are ones your body would have lost that month anyway.
Can eggs frozen in India be used abroad?
Not always: moving eggs across borders is regulated in both countries and is not always permitted. If you may live abroad later, we check this with you before you start.
In their words, not ours.
They have accommodation facility also available so in case you are from different city, you don't need to worry about anything...
