After Embryo Transfer: Dos and Don'ts to Follow
After an embryo transfer, lie down for about 20 minutes, empty your bladder and go home. Bed rest is not needed: work, housework, stairs, walking and travel are all safe. At Jananam Fertility Centre, Chennai, we ask you to avoid heavy gym lifting and intercourse, take every prescribed medicine on time, and test on the day we give you.
Key takeaways
- About 20 minutes lying down is enough after a transfer; bed rest does not improve the chance of pregnancy.
- Work, housework, stairs, walking, sitting on the floor and travel are all safe after an embryo transfer.
- Avoid heavy gym lifting, smoking and alcohol, and at Jananam we also ask you to avoid intercourse after transfer.
- Take the hormone medicines at the same time every day and do not stop them without asking us, even after a positive test.
How should I lie down, sit or get up after an embryo transfer?
Any position that is comfortable is fine: on your back, on your side, or sitting. Get up from the bed the way you normally do; you do not need to roll slowly or keep your legs raised. Sitting cross-legged on the floor, as many of us do at home, is safe. The embryo sits inside the womb's lining and is not moved by posture.
Can I fly, go shopping or take a bath after embryo transfer?
Yes. Flying, a car or train journey, a two-wheeler ride as a passenger and a shopping trip are all fine. Take a shower or bath as usual; water does not reach the embryo. If you are flying home after treatment, keep your medicines in your hand luggage and carry our prescription.
Why is the advice on sex different after IUI and after embryo transfer?
After IUI, sperm still need to meet the egg, and sex does no harm. After an embryo transfer, the embryo is already in the womb, so there is nothing to gain and we advise waiting. Ask us when it is reasonable to resume. [CONFIRM: Jananam's time frame]
When should I take a pregnancy test after embryo transfer?
Take the blood test on the day we give you: at Jananam, usually day 14 after a day-3 embryo transfer and day 12 after a blastocyst transfer. Results come around 4 pm that day. Home tests taken earlier can mislead, especially if you had an hCG trigger or hCG support. Keep taking your medicines until we have the result.
When does implantation happen, and what should I feel?
A blastocyst usually begins to implant within a few days of transfer, but you cannot feel it happen. Mild cramps, spotting, tiredness or sore breasts are common and are mostly caused by the progesterone medicines. Having these symptoms, or having none, does not tell you whether it has worked. Only the blood test can.
What if I bleed before my test date?
Light spotting is common and does not always mean the cycle has failed. Do not stop your progesterone; call us first. Heavy bleeding with dizziness, or severe pain, needs same-day care: call 108 or go to the nearest emergency department, then call us on +91 89399 94244.

How long should I lie down after an embryo transfer?
About 20 minutes is enough. After that you can empty your bladder and go home; an overnight stay is not needed. Lying still for longer does not improve the chance of implantation, because an embryo does not fall out when you stand up or walk around.
Is bed rest necessary after embryo transfer?
No. Bed rest is not necessary at all. A pregnancy occurs if the egg and sperm are functionally competent and the uterus is normal, not because of body movement. Staying at home does not increase your chance of pregnancy, and normal household activity is safe.
Can I travel or climb stairs after an embryo transfer?
Yes. Travelling does not affect a pregnancy, and climbing stairs is safe: it will not reduce your chance of conceiving or increase the risk of miscarriage. A daily walk is fine too. What we do advise avoiding is strenuous weightlifting in the gym.
Should I avoid intercourse after embryo transfer?
Yes, we advise avoiding intercourse after transfer. Intercourse can increase uterine contractions, which may work against a pregnancy becoming established. Your clinic will tell you when it is reasonable to resume.
Can I go back to work after an embryo transfer?
Yes. If you are working, please continue to do so. Staying at home does not improve the outcome, and for many people returning to a normal routine makes the two-week wait considerably easier to manage.
How soon can I return to exercise after embryo transfer?
Gentle walking can resume immediately, and most normal activity within a day or two. Strenuous weightlifting and high-impact exercise are best left for a couple of weeks, largely because the ovaries may still be enlarged after stimulation rather than because movement affects implantation. If you develop significant bloating, abdominal pain or breathlessness, contact the clinic rather than pushing through it.
How Many IVF Cycles Does It Take to Get Pregnant?
There is no fixed number of IVF cycles.
Unexplained Infertility: Is IVF the Only Option?
No. When every test is normal but pregnancy has not happened, the diagnosis is unexplained infertility, and IVF is one option among several.
