IVF AND IUI

Which fertility hospital in Chennai should we choose? Here's how to check any clinic.

Search for a fertility hospital in Chennai and you get ranked lists, most written by the clinics themselves. We won't add another. Here are the seven checks that tell you more than any list, and how to do them yourself.

  • How to choose a fertility clinic in Chennai

Key takeaways

  • A ranked list of clinics tells you who wrote the list, not which clinic suits you.
  • Every ART clinic in India must be registered under the ART Act 2021, and you can check the national registry yourself.
  • A success rate means little unless it says live births, per cycle started, for your age band.
  • Ask every clinic the same seven questions, and ask for the answers in writing.

The short answer

We won't rank fertility hospitals in Chennai, including ourselves. Check any clinic the same way: its ART registration on the national registry, who does your procedures, how it counts success, a written price, an embryology lab on site, both partners tested, and a plan for when to stop. Jananam Fertility Centre answers all seven in writing.

01

Which fertility hospital in Chennai is right for us?

The one that answers seven checkable questions clearly and in writing. No ranked list can tell you that.

Most lists of Chennai fertility hospitals are written by a clinic, and the clinic that wrote the list is usually first. Ours was too: this page used to rank ten clinics, with Jananam first. We took it down, because a clinic is not a fair judge of its competitors. What you can judge is how a clinic works: who treats you, how it counts results, what it charges, and whether it will tell you when to stop.

Honest note

The UK regulator says small differences between clinics' success rates are often down to chance and to the patients each clinic treats, and advises not to choose on success rates alone. (What the evidence says (HFEA, Choose a fertility clinic))

02

How do we check that a fertility clinic is registered?

Look it up on the National ART and Surrogacy Registry, and ask to see the registration certificate.

Under the ART (Regulation) Act 2021, no clinic may offer IVF, IUI or other assisted reproduction unless it is registered (section 15). The certificate must be displayed in the clinic, with its validity dates (section 16). The government registry publishes a list of registered clinics by state, with registration numbers. Jananam is registered as an ART Level 2 clinic. ART/CHE/121/2023. [CONFIRM: National ART & Surrogacy Registry number]

The Jananam Standard, question 7
03

Who will actually do our scans, egg collection and transfer?

Ask by name. The doctor you meet first is not always the one who treats you.

In some clinics a senior name sees you once, and different doctors scan, collect eggs and transfer. Ask who does each step, what their training in reproductive medicine is, and for how long they have practised it. At Jananam, your specialist stays with you from the first scan to embryo transfer. Our doctors' qualifications are listed by name, so you can check them.

04

How do we compare success rates between clinics?

Only when both clinics count the same thing: live births, per cycle started, for your age band, with donor egg cycles shown separately.

A rate per embryo transfer leaves out every couple who never reached a transfer. A pregnancy rate counts positive tests, not babies. A clinic-wide figure mixes 28-year-olds with 42-year-olds, and donor egg cycles lift it further. A headline rate with no age band, no period and no cycle count cannot be compared with anything. Ask what the figure means for someone with your age and your tests.

Honest note

We do not publish a headline success rate yet. When we do, it will be live births per cycle started, by age band, with every exclusion stated, and we will publish whatever it shows, including where it is lower than couples hope. (Jananam, Success rates page)

Why we don't publish a headline rate yet
05

What else should we check before choosing?

The price in writing, the lab on site, both partners tested, add-ons with evidence, and a plan for when to stop.

Ask for the full price in writing before you start, including medicines, freezing and storage. The cheapest quote can cost more if it leaves things out, and a high price is not proof of quality. Ask whether the embryology lab is in the same building, so eggs and embryos are not moved. Ask whether he has a semen analysis in the first round. Ask which add-ons they would recommend for you, and the evidence for each. And ask when they would advise you to change plan, pause or stop.

What decides the costIVF add-ons, and the evidence
06

What should make us walk away from a clinic?

A guarantee, pressure to decide today, or reluctance to give you your own numbers.

Be wary of any clinic that promises a baby, quotes one success rate with no age band, or offers a package that expires this week. Be wary of IVF recommended at the first visit before both of you are tested, of the same plan for every couple, and of vague answers about price. After a failed cycle, a clinic should give you a written summary of what happened. If it won't, a second opinion is reasonable.

Second opinion: bring your whole file

Questions couples ask

Still unsure? Ask us on WhatsApp — a real person replies.

Can you give us a ranked list of fertility hospitals in Chennai?

No. We are one of the clinics, so our ranking would not be fair to you or to them. Use the seven checks on this page with every clinic you are considering, including us.

What is the IVF success rate in Chennai?

There is no single honest figure for a city, because each clinic counts differently and treats different couples. Your own chance depends mainly on the woman's age, egg reserve, the sperm and the diagnosis, and a doctor should explain it after your tests.

How much does IVF cost at a fertility hospital in Chennai?

It depends on the tests, the medicines, whether ICSI or freezing is needed, and how many transfers follow. Ask for the full price in writing before you start. At Jananam, EMI options exist and are explained before you commit.

Is Jananam a maternity hospital too?

No. Jananam Fertility Centre treats fertility only, at Neelankarai and Thiruporur, and has no maternity ward. After a positive pregnancy test we see you through the early weeks and then hand over your care to an obstetrician. [CONFIRM: to which week, and referral practice]

Is IVF safe?

IVF is generally very safe, and most people have no problems. The main risks are ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, twins or more when more than one embryo is transferred, and ectopic pregnancy, and a clinic should explain each one before you start.

Is it normal to visit more than one clinic before deciding?

Yes. Asking two clinics the same questions is the quickest way to see which one answers plainly. A clinic that is confident in its plan will not mind.
