Short luteal phase: Causes & treatment options for fertility

A short luteal phase is 10 days or less between ovulation and your next period. It can reflect thyroid, prolactin, weight, stress or ovulation problems, and those can be treated. Research has not shown that it causes infertility on its own. At Jananam Fertility Centre, Chennai, we look for the cause before offering progesterone.

Key takeaways

  • A luteal phase of 10 days or less, counted from ovulation to your next period, is called short.
  • It is a sign, not a disease: thyroid, prolactin, weight, stress, heavy exercise and weak ovulation are the usual causes.
  • Research has not shown that a short luteal phase on its own causes infertility or miscarriage (ASRM, 2021).
  • Treat the cause first; progesterone is standard in IVF cycles, but its benefit in natural cycles is not proven.

How do I count my luteal phase at home?

Find your ovulation day first: a temperature rise that lasts 3 days, or an ovulation kit turning positive (ovulation usually follows within about a day). Count from the day after ovulation to the day before your next period. Track 2 or 3 cycles before drawing a conclusion, because one short cycle is common. How to track ovulation.

When is bleeding not a luteal phase problem?
