IUI or IVF: which one is for us?

It depends on her tubes, his sperm, her age and egg reserve, and how long you have been trying. Not on which one sounds more hopeful.

How many IUIs should we try before IVF?

It depends on her age and egg reserve, and we agree the limit before the first cycle. Dr Vani Sundarapandian's limits: "Under 35 with good reserve: 3 to 4 IUI cycles. 35 to 37: 2 to 3. 38 and over: 1 to 2 if reserve is satisfactory. Sooner to IVF if reserve is low or endometriosis is advanced."

How many embryos do you transfer in IVF?

Never more than two, and often one. In Dr Vani Sundarapandian's words: "We do not transfer more than two embryos under any circumstance. Single embryo transfer is preferred for tested euploid embryos at any age, and usually under 38 with a good blastocyst."

Are IVF add-ons worth it?

Some are, for selected couples, and many are not backed by good evidence. On ERA, Dr Vani Sundarapandian says: "We have used ERA in more than 750 patients in the past, but in our experience it did not improve live birth rates sufficiently for us to continue recommending it."

What should I do about severe pain or bleeding after egg collection or transfer?

Severe tummy pain, a swollen tummy, breathlessness or heavy bleeding needs same-day care: call 108 or go to the nearest emergency department. Then call us on +91 89399 94244.
